10e episode - Een wolf - drie hertjes en bambi en een dikke snapping turtle.

Het wordt weer een lang verhaaltje, maar jullie moeten maar kijken wanneer jullie afhaken (of misschien hebben jullie dat al lang gedaan, dat kan natuurlijk ook ;-).

Wij reizen ongeveer 6 uur op een dag, meestal ongeveer 250 mijl per dag. Dat is ook zo'n beetje de afstand die we moeten rijden. We hebben al een hele aardige routine opgebouwd. Opstaan om ongeveer 7 uur, douchen, ontbijtje klaarmaken en eten, de boel opruimen en de systemen afkoppelen, eventueel "grey water and black water" dumpen", eventueel nieuw water innemen en dan kunnen we weg. Nou, dan is het meestal wel 10 uur.

Vanochtend om vijf uur moest ik een plasje doen, en keek ik even uit het raam. Het schemerde nog. Op ongeveer 50 meter van onze RV stonden drie hertjes lekker van het malse gras te eten, met een bambi, een babyhertje, erbij. Ik was te slaperig om mijn telefoon snel te kunnen pakken, dus ik heb helaas geen foto's, maar dat is dan maar zo. Je kunt niet alles op de foto zetten. De wolf (ja, echt!) die gisteren voor onze camper overstak heb ik ook niet op de foto. So you have to take my/our word for it. We hebben hem alledrie gezien, en het was een flinke! En vandaag langs de kant van de weg ook nog een hele dikke schildpad. En natuurlijk squirrels, die hebben we al veel meer gezien.

We zijn begonnen in Canada met ongeveer 2 graden celsius, en na een paar dagen waren het er al ongeveer 22. Dat was heel lekker. Inmiddels zijn we echter weer een heel stuk naar het westen opgeschoven, en zijn we dwars door Michigan ook weer naar boven, naar het noorden gereden, en jawel hoor, dan zakt de temperatuur weer. Onmiddellijk. Het is hier (vlak bij Duluth, Minnesota) inmiddels weer 12 graden celsius, en toen we stonden te tanken, zakte de temperatuur gedurende die korte tijd dat het tanken in beslag nam, ongeveer met 3 graden. We hebben dus de kachel weer aan in onze camper. Heel cosy allemaal. Je moet wel met zo'n halve Antilliaan die niet tegen de kou kan ......;-).

Ik had een hotspot bij deze camper besteld, en hem ook gekregen. Helaas hebben we dat ding nooit aan de praat gekregen, en op een gegeven moment hebben we het ook maar opgegeven. Op zich is dat tot nu toe geen probleem gebleken. Elke camping die we tot nu toe bezocht hebben heeft WiFi, de ene wat beter dan de andere, maar we kunnen er goed mee uit de voeten. Zo plannen we 's avonds met internet onze route voor de volgende dag (met GoogleMaps), zodat je de afstand kunt inschatten, en een camping kunt zoeken, en dat werkt heel goed, tot nu toe. 

Omdat we eigenlijk heel goed op schema liggen plan ik ook een beetje vooruit. Het is de bedoeling dat we in Montana ook nog een bezoekje aan een highschoolvriendin, Lou Ann en Dave, gaan brengen, in Helena, Montana. Maar, voordat we dat gaan doen, komen we dicht in de buurt van Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone National Park is enorm groot. De oppervlakte bedraagt bijna 9.000 km2. Om het wat beter te visualiseren: dat is ongeveer een kwart van Nederland! Er lopen doorgaande wegen door het natuurgebied heen.

Het is een van de eerste nationale parken van de US en daar gaan we natuurlijk, als het even kan, ook niet aan voorbijrijden. Sterker nog, we gaan er zelfs in kamperen. Op dit moment staan we op een RV park in Duluth, de meest westelijke haven van Lake Superior. Om jullie een idee te geven van hoe groot The Great Lakes zijn (zoetwatermeren!) het volgende: deze meren worden bevaren door zeewaardige zeeschepen, die over duizenden kilometers het graan van het midwesten via de St. Lawrence River naar de Atlantisch Oceaan vervoeren. Zeeschepen op een zoetwatermeer, het moet niet gekker worden. En het kan er net zo spoken als op zee.....

Ter vergelijking: je moet je voorstellen dat in Oostenrijk, midden in Tirol, de zeeschepen aanmeren....
